Baseball team pounds out 12 hits, wins at San Diego City

Irvine Valley's baseball team put up four runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back on its way to a 10-5 win at San Diego City on Tuesday afternoon.

The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 8-6 overall and snapped a two-game skid.

The Lasers pounded out 12 hits in the game, including getting multi-hit games from freshman center fielder Ben McConnell, freshman third baseman David Rojas, sophomore left fielder Wyatt McGinnis and sophomore right fielder Grant Rockefeller.

It was the third time this season that IVC has scored at least 10 runs in a game.

McConnell went 3 for 5 with two doubles, a walk, two runs scored and three RBI.

Rojas also had a three-hit game, going 3 for 4 with a walk, two runs and one RBI. McGinnis was 2 for 4 with a run scored and Rockefeller went 2 for 4 with two walks and two RBI. Freshman shortstop Dustin Angus also had a hit and two RBI for the Lasers.

After San Diego City scored a run in the top of the first, Rojas had an RBI single, McConnell hit an RBI double and Angus had an RBI single to help give IVC a 4-1 lead.

Ahead, 4-2, in the top of the sixth inning, IVC scored three more runs to help put the game out of reach.

Angus picked up an RBI by walking with the bases loaded, sophomore catcher Ryan Gaynor had a sacrifice fly and then Rockefeller also walked with the bases loaded to make it a 7-2 game.

San Diego City closed within 7-3 after scoring a single run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Lasers tacked on three more runs in the top of the eighth.

The big blow was a two-run double to center by McConnell.

It was more than enough for the combination of freshman hurlers Jason Farese and Chad Burchit.

Farese started and went five innings. He gave up two runs on three hits and six walks with four strikeouts. Burchit earned a four-inning save. He gave up three runs (one earned)on  three hits with four strikeouts.

Irvine Valley will take on San Diego City again on Thursday. The Lasers host the Knights at 2 p.m.
