Baseball team scores two late and nips West LA on the road

Irvine Valley's baseball team scored a run in the eighth and another in the ninth inning for a come-from-behind 8-7 win over West LA on Thursday.

The win improved the team's record to 7-4 overall and was a nice bounce back victory after a tough loss to Grossmont in extra innings at home on Wednesday.

Sophomore shortstop Tyler Odekirk led the offense, going 3 for 5 with three runs scored.

Sophomore right fielder Cole Joy was 2 for 3 with a run scored and one RBI, freshman catcher Ryan Gaynor went 2 for 5 with one RBI and freshman second baseman Nash Hathaway went 2 for 3 with a run scored for IVC.

Irvine Valley trailed, 7-6, going into the eighth inning, but sophomore Alec Ceniceros hit a solo home run on the first pitch of the inning to tie the game.

In the top of the ninth, freshman third baseman Ryan Rafferty drew a lead-off walk. Joy sacrificed Rafferty to second and then Rafferty stole third base.

He scored soon after on a wild pitch.

Freshman Rafael Salas picked up the win in relief. He pitched the final four innings of the game and gave up just one run on five hits with one walk. He struck out seven batters.

Freshman Wyatt McGinnis started on the mound for the Lasers and went 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, hosting El Camino-Compton at 2 p.m.
