Baseball team starts 2017 season on Friday at Long Beach

Irvine Valley's baseball team gets its 2017 season underway on Friday with a game at Long Beach City at 2 p.m.

The Lasers then host Long Beach City on Saturday at noon.

Long Beach City is ranked No. 15 in the So. Cal. Preseason Poll by the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association.

The Lasers are coming off a season in which they had a record of 17-19 overall and went 8-13 in the Orange Empire Conference.

IVC had several players receive scholarships to four-year colleges last year, including all-conference sophomore shortstop Jordan Gillerman to St. John's, all-conference sophomore outfielder Clint Jack to Southwest Baptist, sophomore catcher Branden Williams to UC Riverside, all-conference sophomore outfielder Dillon Millar to Concordia, and sophomore pitcher Kyle Goodbrand to UC San Diego.

In addition, freshman utility player Jarrett Anton moved on to Fresno Pacific.

Top returning players for the Lasers include designated hitter Robbie Espinosa, first baseman Tyler Wagner, infielder Tyler Odekirk, catchers Andrew Nero and Cole Joy, utility player Alec Ceniceros and pitchers Austin Reynolds and Matt Markus.
