Baseball team drops third straight to Fullerton

Irvine Valley's baseball team dropped its third straight game to Fullerton, falling, 15-2, in an Orange Empire Conference game on Saturday at Fullerton.

The series sweep of the Lasers helped keep Fullerton (25-8 overall, 13-6 OEC) in the hunt for the Orange Empire Conference title as it trailed Saddleback College by three games.

Irvine Valley's record slipped to 13-20 overall and 4-14 in conference.

Fullerton drew first blood in the second inning on Shane Carrier's solo home run that sailed over left center. It was his 11th of the season.

In the third, the Hornets took a 2-0 lead on a groundout by by Laine Huffman that allowed Joey Parente to score from third base. With the bases loaded, Justin Row drew a walk, scoring Andrew Piraino.

Fullerton broke it open in the fourth when Josh Balbuena hit a double to left center. He was then knocked in by Kevin Foley's rip up the middle. Huffman singled to right bringing Kevin Foley home.

The bases were still loaded when Carrier created more havoc for the Lasers by hitting a shot to center field that scored Row and Parente.

By the end of the fourth, the Hornets were up 7-0.

The Lasers did not go down without a fight as they scored two runs in the sixth. Sophomore catcher Branden Williams hit a single up the middle to score sophomore left fielder Clint Jack. With the bases loaded, freshman right fielder Weston Ellis knocked in sophomore shortstop Jordan Gillerman with a hit.

But Fullerton reliever Chris Sanchez came in and shut down the IVC threat.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Hornets added eight runs more runs to secure the victory.

Fullerton starting pitcher Louis Corral earned the win for the Hornets, going five innings and allowing five hits and one earned run with three strikeouts.

Jack went 2 for 5 and Gillerman was 1 for 3 with a walk for IVC.

Sophomore lefty Ryan Abady took the loss. He went four innings and gave up seven runs on 10 hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Irvine Valley finishes the season next week with a three-game conference series against Riverside.

The Lasers are at Riverside Tuesday and host the Tigers on Thursday.
