Baseball team drops first game of year, loses to West LA

Irvine Valley's baseball team jumped on West Los Angeles early, but couldn't keep it going in a 8-5 loss at home on Thursday afternoon.

The Lasers had nine hits and scored five runs in the first two innings, but only managed two hits and scored no more runs after that.

Irvine Valley's record moved to 1-1 on the season, while West LA improved to 2-1.

After West LA scored two runs (one earned) off of IVC sophomore starting pitcher Kyle Goodbrand in the top of the first, IVC answered with two runs to tie things up.

Sophomore shortstop Justin Gillerman drove in a run with a single and then sophomore catcher Branden Williams also had an RBI single.

Irvine Valley then plated three runs in the bottom of the second to go up, 5-2.

Sophomore left fielder Clint Jack singled up the middle to bring in freshman right fielder Weston Ellis, who had doubled.

A groundout by sophomore center fielder Dillon Millar later scored Jack.

And freshman designated hitter Jeff Anton singled through the left side to bring in freshman second baseman Tyler Odekirk, who had singled earlier in the inning.

That was the end of the scoring for IVC.

Millar walked in the fourth, Williams walked in the fifth, Jack singled in the sixth, Williams and freshman third baseman Adam Rossit walked in the seventh, Jack singled and Odekirk reached on an error in the eighth and Rossit walked in the ninth, but the Lasers couldn't cash any of that in.

West LA took the lead with a six-run top of the fifth inning that saw 11 batters come to the plate. West LA scored its six runs on four hits, one IVC error and two walks.

Goodbrand took the loss for Irvine Valley. He gave up eight runs (five earned) on seven hits and five walks in 4.1 innings. Goodbrand struck out seven batters.

Jack went 3 for 5 with one RBI, Gillerman was 2 for 5 with one RBI and Williams went 1 for 3 with one RBI and two walks for the Lasers.
