Baseball team edged by Cypress for second straight day

Irvine Valley's baseball team dropped its second straight one-run game to Cypress.

After losing, 3-2, in an Orange Empire Conference game at home on Thursday, the Lasers fell to the Chargers, 4-3, in 10 innings on Friday at Cypress.

Irvine Valley's record slipped to 14-12 overall and 6-7 in conference.

Cypress improved to 19-6 overall and 9-4 in conference.

The Lasers dropped in to a tie for fifth place in the conference standings with Riverside.

Cypress is one game behind Orange Coast for first place.

Friday's game was scoreless until IVC got on the board in the top of the third on an RBI single by freshman center fielder Dillon Millar.

The Chargers answered with an Aaron Case RBI double in the third inning, an Austin Case solo home run in the fourth, and Joe Vanmarter RBI single in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead over IVC heading into the sixth.

Irvine Valley responded with one run in the top of the sixth, scoring a run on a groundout by sophomore third baseman Adam Vargas.

The Lasers had a big chance to add more runs in the top of the eighth, but stranded the bases loaded with no outs.

Irvine Valley tied the game in the top of the ninth at 3-3 with a run.

Freshman shortstop Justin Gillerman singled to lead off the inning. Sophomore Zach Vittetow then moved Gillerman to second base with a sacrifice bunt and Gillerman advanced to third on a passed ball.

Freshman designated hitter Trey Ryan then drove Gillerman in with a single.

But Cypress won the game in the bottom of the 10th inning.

With the bases loaded, John Santospago hit a walk off single that scored Jackson Willeford. Santospago went 3 for 5 to lead Cypress.

Payton Smith (1-0) got his first victory of the season on the mound after allowing three hits, one run, one walk, and collecting three strikeouts in four innings pitched in relief.

Freshman Cole Millerd took the loss in relief for IVC. He gave up one run on two hits with two walks and one strikeout in 3.1 innings of relief.

Freshman Michael Torres started on the mound for Irvine Valley and gave up two runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings.

IVC freshman first baseman Lucas Tancas went 3 for 5 with a run scored and Ryan was 2 for 4 with a run and one RBI. Irvine Valley had 10 hits as a team on the day.

Irvine Valley has next week off from conference play, but will take on Pasadena City from the South Coast Conference in a pair of games.

The Lasers are at Pasadena City on Tuesday and then host the Lancers on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
