Baseball team gets another gem from Abady in win over OCC

Freshman left-handed pitcher Ryan Abady threw the Irvine Valley baseball team's second complete game in a row as the Lasers beat Orange Coast, 4-0, in an Orange Empire Conference game on Saturday at home.

Sophomore righty Justin Zielinski pitched a complete game in IVC's 7-3 win over Golden West at home on Thursday.

Saturday, Abady fired 110 pitches in the shutout effort.

He lifted his record to 4-0 on the season after allowing no runs and giving up just three hits and five walks. He struck out four.

Abady also dropped his ERA to 0.85 in 42.1 innings. Zielinski, who is also 4-0, has a 0.77 ERA in 47 innings.

Abady helped Irvine Valley improve its record as a team to 11-7 overall and 3-2 in conference. Orange Coast, which is the defending state champion, fell to 12-8 overall and 3-2 in conference.

IVC took advantage of a few OCC miscues to score its runs.

The Lasers got on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a run. Freshman designated hitter Robbie Espinosa singled to right to lead off and later scored on an OCC error.

The game stayed 1-0 until the eighth inning thanks to Abady's effectiveness on the mound and some great defensive plays behind him. Freshman left fielder Clint Jack, freshman center fielder Dillon Millar and sophomore right fielder Brett Hamilton all made important catches for outs.

In the top of the eighth inning, Millar made a running grab in left center off a ball hit by Tommy Bell with runners on second and third to end the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, IVC scored three more runs to get some breathing room.

Freshman shortstop Jordan Gillerman reached on an error and then freshman second baseman Cory Mendoza got on because of a catcher's interference call.

Gillerman moved up to third on a bad pick off throw by Orange Coast starting pitcher Casey Costello and Jack then walked to load the bases.

Millar came through with a two-strike, RBI single off reliever Scott Serigstad to make it 2-0 and Hamilton hit into a fielder's choice that scored Mendoza and made it 3-0.

Espinosa later hit an RBI single through the right side of the infield to give Irvine Valley a 4-0 lead.

Abady walked a batter in the top of the ninth with two outs, but was able to get Jack Pulcheon to ground out to end the game.

Irvine Valley finished with seven hits on the day.

Espinosa went 3 for 4 with one RBI, freshman first baseman Lucas Tancas went 2 for 4, Millar went 1 for 3 with one RBI and Jack was 1 for 2 with two walks.

Chaneng Varela had two of Orange Coast's three hits.

Costello was tagged with the loss. He went seven innings and allowed four runs (none earned) on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Irvine Valley plays its next three games on the road. The Lasers are at Saddleback on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
