Baseball team runs out of time against Riverside

Irvine Valley's baseball team tried to rally late, but ran out of time against Riverside and lost, 4-1, in an Orange Empire Conference game at home on Thursday.

Riverside scored four runs in the top of the second inning (three unearned) and made it stand up behind a strong starting pitching performance from Tyler Rowe.

Riverside improved to 16-15 overall and 10-8 in the Orange Empire Conference, while Irvine Valley slipped to 8-22 overall and 4-14 in conference.

Rowe pitched 8 2/3 innings and gave up just one run on seven hits with no walks and struck out three batters.

Irvine Valley sophomore starting pitcher Chris Lumanlan was also solid.

He went eight innings and gave up four runs, but three of them were unearned. Lumanlan allowed six hits and struck out two.

Irvine Valley made four errors in the game, including two in the second inning when Riverside scored its four runs.

The Lasers made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth inning.

They did it all with two outs.

Sophomore second baseman Dallas Porter singled up the middle and then freshman third baseman Adam Vargas singled through the left side.

Lowe was replaced by Nick Hynes on the mound.

Hynes walked IVC sophomore left fielder Matt Harris to load the bases and a wild pitch on ball four scored Porter with Irvine Valley's run. Vargas moved up to third base.

Harris then advanced to second base on another wild pitch. Freshman second baseman Nate Cervantes walked to load the bases.

Austin Sodders came in for Hynes on the mound and got IVC freshman designated hitter Pedro Gonzalez to ground out to end the game.

Lowe picked up the win and improved to 4-3 on the year. Lumanalan took the loss and fell to 2-6. Sodders got the save for RCC.

Nick King led Riverside with two hits, one RBI and a stolen base. Michael Deceglie was 1 for 3 with a run scored and one RBI.

Freshman catcher Ben DePerry and Vargas were each 2 for 4 for Irvine Valley.

The Lasers play at Riverside on Friday at 2 p.m. to wrap up the three-game season series.
