Irvine Valley's baseball team came through with a much needed win on Friday at Orange Coast.
The Lasers defeated the Pirates, 4-3, to snap a 10-game skid and salvage one of the three games in the season series with OCC.
Orange Coast defeated Irvine Valley, 3-1, a day earlier.
In the victory Friday, Irvine Valley (7-18, 3-10) scored two runs in the top of the second inning to take an early lead.
Freshman shortstop Zach Vittetow was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The hit by pitch brought in freshman third baseman Adam Vargas with the first run of the game.
Sophomore second baseman Dallas Porter then singled to right field to score freshman catcher Ben DePerry and make it 2-0.
The Lasers went up 3-1 when sophomore pitcher Jesus Meza singled in Porter in the top of the seventh inning.
Irvine Valley saw Orange Coast (20-7, 8-5) rally to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
But Irvine Valley fought back with a run in the top of the eighth inning to win the game.
In the top of the eighth, IVC had runners on first and second and two outs.
Irvine Valley freshman center fielder Brett Hamilton then hit a grounder to shortstop. The ball took a fortunate hop for Hamilton and the Lasers past the OCC shortstop and went into center to bring in sophomore first baseman Brady Zinsser with what turned out to be the winning run.
IVC sophomore reliever Jeremy Ibarra (1-0) came in and retired seven straight OCC batters to pick up the win.
Meza pitched good enough for the Lasers as the starter. He went 6 2/3 innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on 10 hits and two walks. He had four strikeouts.
Porter was 2 for 4 with one RBI, Vargas was 2 for 4 and Meza went 2 for 5 to lead the offense.
In the game on Thursday, Orange Coast starting pitcher David Hill went the distance to improve his record to 7-0. The sophomore allowed one unearned run on six hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Sophomore Chris Lumanlan pitched solidly for IVC. He went seven innings and gave up three runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Lumanlan's record slipped to 2-5.
Orange Coast scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead for good. OCC added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh.
The Lasers scored their run in the top of the fourth on a sac bunt by Vargas.
Vargas went 2 for 3 with one RBI for IVC in the contest.
Irvine Valley returns to action on Tuesday at home against Golden West at 2 p.m.
