Baseball team rallies for win over San Diego City

Irvine Valley's baseball team bounced back from a tough loss on Tuesday with a 6-4 win over San Diego City at home on Thursday.

The Lasers fell to LA Harbor, 15-2, on Tuesday and were down early against San Diego City, but battled back for the victory.

The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 4-7 on the season. San Diego City slipped to 2-7 on the year.

Irvine Valley got a solid performance from sophomore right-handed pitcher Chris Lumanlan on the mound.

San Diego City scored three runs in the opening inning off of IVC sophomore starting pitcher Harrison Collacott.

The Knights then loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second when Lumanlan replaced Collacott.

San Diego City pushed across one run on a fielder's choice by Anthony Lee, but Lumanlan got out of the jam with a double play.

The Knights led, 4-0.

Irvine Valley got going on offense in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Lasers scored five runs to take the lead.

Sophomore first baseman Brady Zinsser drove in one run with a single. And then with two outs, sophomore Teddy Steffel, who came into the game as a pinch-hitter, drove in two runs with a single to right field to make it a 4-3 game.

The next batter, sophomore left fielder Matt Harris, gave IVC the lead for good with a two-run home run over the left field fence.

IVC added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a squeeze bunt by freshman catcher Pedro Gonzalez. It scored Harris, who reached on a hard hit infield single earlier in the frame.

Lumanlan did the rest. He went eight full innings and didn't give up a run. Lumanlan only allowed two hits and one walk and struck out seven.

He improved his record to 2-1 on the season.

Kyle Peeler took the loss in relief for San Diego City. He gave up two runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings.

On offense for IVC, Harris was 2 for 4 with two RBI. Zinsser went 2 for 4 with one RBI and freshman third baseman Adam Vargas was 2 for 4.

Irvine Valley finished with 10 hits in the game.

San Diego City was paced by Henry Grow, who was 2 for 4 and Geordy Smith, who went 1 for 4 with two RBI.

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, hosting LA Harbor at 2 p.m.

It is the final game before Orange Empire Conference play starts next week for the Lasers.
