Baseball team falls to Victor Valley

Irvine Valley's baseball team fell behind early and couldn't recover in a 4-2 loss to Victor Valley at home on Tuesday afternoon.

Victor Valley was actually ahead, 9-2, in the top of the ninth inning, but the game was called due to darkness. As a result the score reverted back to the final inning played, which was the eighth.

Victor Valley scored two runs in the top of the second inning and added a run in the top of the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead.

Irvine Valley got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single up the middle by freshman second baseman Nate Cervantes. The hit scored sophomore shortstop Dallas Porter, who had tripled.

Both IVC hits came with two outs.

But Victor Valley scored another run in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-1 lead.

Irvine Valley scored its final run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by sophomore designated hitter Brady Zinsser. It scored freshman third baseman Zach Vittetow, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

The Lasers had more hits in the game than Victor Valley (7 to 5), but IVC pitchers walked nine Victor Valley batters.

Freshman starting pitcher Donny Pierce took the loss for the Lasers. He went 3 1/3 innings pitched and allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and six walks with two strikeouts.

His record dropped to 1-1 on the season.

Sophomore Harrison Collacott relieved Pierce. He went 2 2/3 innings and allowed one run on two hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Freshman Brett DaRe' threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings after that for the Lasers.

At the plate, Cervantes was 2 for 4 with one RBI, Porter went 1 for 2 with a run scored and two walks and Vittetow was 1 for 2 with a walk and a run scored for Irvine Valley.

Irvine Valley saw its record drop to 2-5 on the season.

The Lasers play again on Thursday at Long Beach City at 2 p.m. Irvine Valley then hosts Long Beach City on Saturday at noon.
