Baseball team loses, 4-2, at San Diego City

Irvine Valley's baseball team lost at San Diego City, 4-2, on Tuesday afternoon in a nonconference game.

The Lasers saw their record slip to 2-2 on the season.

It was the team's first road game of the year.

Both teams finished with nine hits in the game.

Freshman catcher Ben DePerry went 3 for 4 with one RBI.

Sophomore designated hitter Jesus Meza and freshman first baseman Anthony Lopez were each 2 for 4 for IVC.

Freshman third baseman Adam Vargas was 1 for 4 with a walk and one RBI.

Irvine Valley took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth, but San Diego City answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Lasers tied the game on an RBI double by DePerry in the top of the seventh. The hit scored Lopez.

But San Diego City scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by Bobby Martinez and an RBI single by Henry Grow and then held on for the win.

Freshman Justin Zielinski started on the mound for the Lasers and went six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

Freshman Brett DaRe' took the loss on the mound for IVC. He gave up two runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief of Zielinski.

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, traveling to Southwestern in Chula Vista for a 2 p.m. game.
