Beach volleyball team shuts out Hawks and Bobcats

Irvine Valley's women's beach volleyball team continued its recent solid play and won two more matches Friday at home.

The Lasers defeated Santiago Canyon, 5-0, in a morning match and then beat Santiago Canyon Saddleback, 5-0, in the afternoon.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 3-7 overall and 3-1 in the Orange Empire Conference. IVC has won three of its last four contests.

There were some tough contests in each competition with two matches against Santiago Canyon going three sets and two more going three vs. Saddleback.

Irvine Valley won matches on the first and second courts against Santiago Canyon.

The sophomore duo of Avery Bennett and Audrey Fowler came out on top, 21-8, 16-21, 15-7, and the No. 2 squad of sophomores Alya Mersin and Jayva Anderson rallied for a 15-21, 21-5, 15-0 (due to injury) victory.

Irvine Valley's No. 3 team of freshmen Maia Garcia and Jheazrell May Quindoza won in straight sets, 21-17, 21-17.

The Lasers earned victories on courts four (freshmen Valeria Leon and Jessica Lopez) and five (freshman Nikki MacDonald and Ellyza Quiat) by forfeit. 

Irvine Valley moved on to face Saddleback and was up, 1-0, after the Bobcats forfeited on the fifth court.

Leon and Lopez played their best match of the season in scoring a 21-18, 21-15 triump at No. 4.

Irvine Valley secured its third win and the match Bennett and Fowler earning a 22-20, 21-18 on the first quart.

The duos of Mersin and Anderson (11-21, 21-19, 15-10) and Quindoza and Garcia (20-22, 21-19, 15-11) each battled for the Lasers and came away with three-set wins to finish off the day.

Irvine Valley plays again next Friday at Riverside against the Tigers and Golden West. IVC starts play at 10 a.m.
