Women's beach volleyball team has solid start to OEC tourney

It was a good day for the Irvine Valley women's beach volleyball team Wednesday.

The Lasers, who won the Eastern Division of the Orange Empire Conference, learned early in the day that they had been selected for the CCCAA Southern California Team Regionals.

IVC will take on host Orange Coast and Rio Hondo next Tuesday at the Newland Courts in Huntington Beach. IVC will take on OCC at 10 a.m. and then Rio Hondo at 11 a.m.

Irvine Valley then went out and was one of the best team of the day in the opening rounds of the OEC Pairs Tournament at IVC.

The Lasers moved four of their six pairs participating on to the round of 16 on Friday.

The rest of the rounds on Friday will also be played at Irvine Valley and start at 10 a.m.

Moving on from Wednesday's round of 32 were the pairs of sophmores Chloe Swanson and Barett Nolan, sophomore Gabi Brown and freshman Sydney Dews, freshman Tessa Marocco and sophomore Angie Griego and freshmen Emily Hon and Mia Bertolone.

Swanson and Nolan won their match, 21-4, 21-9 and Brown and Dews came out on top, 21-11, 21-12, over IVC teammates Felicia Bonus and Sydney Schuler.

The duo of Marocco and Griego won, 21-9, 21-17, over the second tream from Riverside.

And in a nice surprise for the Lasers, Hon and Bertolone pulled off a 20-22, 21-15, 15-9 victory over the second team from Santa Ana.

Along with Irvine Valley's four teams that moved on, Orange Coast had five pairs advance, Saddleback and Santa Ana had two teams each and Cypress, Golden West and Riverside had one squad apiece.
