Women's beach volleyball pairs set for regional Friday at IVC

Four Irvine Valley women's beach volleyball pairs will be ready to hit the sand at IVC on Friday morning when the CCCAA South Region Pairs competition gets underway.

Play begins at 10 a.m. and includes 32 pairs from all over Southern California.

Those that advanced from the Orange Empire Conference Championship last week are IVC's squads of sophomore Renata Bath and freshman Lea Kruse, sophomores Alyssa Vortouni and Emilie Austin, freshmen Anna Unke and Gabriela Griego and freshmen Alaina Gendale and Kendall Nolan.

Bath and Kruse and Vortouni and Austin were co-champs of the OEC event last week.

Bath and Kruse are seeded fourth in the region tourney and will take on the 29th seed from San Diego City in the opening round. Vortouni and Austin are seeded sixth and will face off against at 27th seed from San Diego Mesa.

Unke and Griego are seeded 18th and will take on a 15th seed from Bakersfield and Gendale and Nolan are seeded 30th and play th third seed from Santa Monica in the first round.

A win in the opening round of the event automatically qualifies a pair on to the state championship.

Irvine Valley has already qualified for the team State Championship next week.

The team and pairs state championships will be held at the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista next Thursday through Saturday.
