Three women's beach volleyball pairs move on in tourney

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team had three pairs move on to the final day of the Orange Empire Conference Individuals Championship on Friday at Golden West College.

The opening round took place on Wednesday at IVC and saw the Laser duos of sophomore Taira Ka'awaloa and freshman Megan Ramseyer, sophomore Olivia Aguilar and freshman Renata Bath and sophomore Hanna Salaya and freshman Emilie Austin advance.

Ka'awaloa and Ramseyer, who are seeded second overall, defeated IVC teammates to move on. They had to defeat the duo of sophomore Diamond Brogan and Alyssa Vortouni, 21-14, 21-9.

Brogan and Vortouni took a 12-11 lead in the first set, but Ka'awaloa and Ramseyer stormed back with five points in a row and never looked back.

Brogan and Vortouni won a play-in game, 21-6, 21-16, before to move into the main draw.

Aguilar and Bath, who were seeded 10th, defeated Cherene Uale and Erica Cantley of Golden West, 21-3, 21-10, and Salaya and Austin, who were the 18th seed, upset the 15th-seeded team of Kayla Long and Kassandra Murillo of Santa Ana, 21-6, 21-13.

Irvine Valley nearly had another upset and team move on, but the freshmen duo of Gabi Lau and Alma Entesari lost a tough one to seventh-seeded Penina Wilder and Kayla Owens of Cypress, 21-19, 18-21, 15-13.

The final day on Friday at noon at Golden West will determine which eight pairs move on to the individual tournament at the CCCAA State Championship next week at West Valley College in Saratoga.
