Irvine Valley's women's sand volleyball team played some tough sets against both NCAA fifth-ranked Long Beach State and the University of Arizona on Friday at IVC.
But the Lasers came up on the short end in both matches.
Long Beach State defeated Irvine Valley, 5-0, and Arizona beat the Lasers, 4-1.
Long Beach State also earned a 4-1 victory over Arizona.
The Lasers had several close matches.
Against Long Beach State, the Irvine Valley No. 2 team of sophomore Becky Moodie and sophomore Annie Mitchem lost, 21-18, 21-19.
IVC's No. 4 team of freshman Hailey Jones and sophomore Alexis Radecki went three sets with the Long Beach duo of Joy Miley and Makayla Taylor.
But Miley and Taylor earned a 21-13, 17-21, 15-8 win.
Against Arizona, Moodie and Mitchem went three sets at the No. 2 spot against the team of Tyler Jackson and Janisa Johnson.
Johnson and Jackson won, 20-22, 21-9, 15-8.
IVC's No. 4 team of Jones and Radecki went three sets again.
But Arizona's duo of Allie Cook and Penina Snuka came out on top, 19-21, 21-15, 15-7.
Cook is a former IVC player, competing for the Lasers the last two seasons. She helped Irvine Valley to a community college state title in sand volleyball last season.
This was Irvine Valley's final match before the start of the community college playoffs. The Lasers will host the event next Friday.
