"It has taken months and months in the planning, weeks in executing the details, and so many people involved," Irvine Valley Dean and Athletic Director Keith Shackleford said. "We are fortunate that our college and the South Orange County Community College District leadership saw the value in serving our dedicated students, and we are thankful that our campus colleagues have been supportive every, single step of the way."

Irvine Valley teams are scheduled to play with California Community College Athletic Association approval in the spring of 2021.

Classes/workouts on campus in the interim have be restricted to those that are directly related to Intercollegiate Athletics and student-athletes, coaches and staff that have gone through check ins before allowing to train.

Irvine Valley instructional content is allowing for conditioning and activities to prepare and condition Irvine Valley student athletes that are enrolled in fall sport specific team classes for California Community College Athletic Association Spring 2021 competition within full compliance of state, county and city guidelines.

The California Community College Athletic Association announced in July that it will be implementing a return to competition for student athletes beginning in 2021.

"The California Community College Athletic Association Board of Directors overwhelmingly approved implementation of its Contingency Plan in July, providing a return to intercollegiate athletics for the 2020-21 academic year that shifts all sports, including football, to the spring season," according to a release on www.cccaasports.org.

"The Contingency Plan was among three potential scenarios approved by the Board in early June (2020). Each plan was wholly dependent on which phase of reopening from the COVID-19 pandemic the state of California was in on the CCCAA's previously announced July 17 decision date. The return to athletics in January will only occur if it is safe to do so, a decision that will be guided primarily by state and local health guidelines."

Irvine Valley participates in 11 intercollegiate athletic sports, including women's and men's basketball, women's and men's soccer, women's and men's volleyball, women's and men's tennis, women's badminton women's beach volleyball and baseball.

Men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball are scheduled to be played in the first spring session from Feb. 5, 2021 to April 17, 2021 with women's badminton, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball and baseball slated to compete in the second spring session from Apr. 10, 2021 to June 23, 2021.
