Irvine Valley's athletics program had another strong, top-20 finish in the National Alliance of Two-Year Collegiate Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Cup.
The Lasers placed 17 among all schools for community colleges in California with 81 points.
IVC was 12th in the 2018 NATYCAA Cup results.
Irvine Valley was competitive with the top schools in the state this past school year, most that include football and more than the 13 sports that Irvine Valley offers.
First established in 2003-04 the NATYCAA Cup recognizes the outstanding overall programs in two-year colleges from throughout the entire country. Each college is allowed to score points from their top-five programs per gender in the highest level of competition within their division. Each sport is treated equally so that the champ ion of each sport earns 20 points towards their NATYCAA Cup total. Second place finishes earn 19 points, third place earns 18 points, etc.
IVC started with 17.5 points last fall from its women's volleyball team that won the Orange Empire Conference and made another run to the state tournament. The women's basketball team garnered 8.5 points after winning a conference title and making the So. Cal. Regional playoff finals.
Irvine Valley's men's tennis team also won an OEC championship and was one match away from making the state final. The Laser men's tennis squad earned 14.5 points this spring.
IVC's men's volleyball team upset top-ranked Orange Coast and made the state final match to collect 16.0 points.
And Irvine Valley's women's tennis team scored 14.5 points for reaching a regional final and the women's beach volleyball team pulled in 10.0 points after winning a conference title making the state championship tournament.
Mt. SAC posted 162 points in the final tally to win the cup, edging Riverside, which finished with 159 points, and Fresno City, which took third with 152 points.
Sierra (146.5 points) led the standings after the midway point of the 2018-19 athletic year and took fourth, followed by American River (143.5), San Joaquin Delta (143.0), El Camino (130.0), Cerritos (113.5) and Orange Coast (112.0).
Colleges are awarded points based on their teams' final positions in post-conference competition with state championships worth the most points (20). Each college's top-five men's and top-five women's team results count toward the school's overall point total. Parity between Northern and Southern California schools was evidenced in the top 10 standings with each region placing five teams. So. Cal. had the first two spots before No. Cal. grabbed the next four. In all, nine programs scored at least 100 points and 86 of the CCCAA's 108 members tallied at least three.
This is the 16th year that NATYCAA has sponsored a State Association's division. A list of previous CCCAA winners and complete standings from each year can be found at www.cccaasports.org.
The National Alliance of Two-Year Collegiate Athletic Administrators will present the awards next Wednesday (June 12) during the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Convention in Orlando, Florida.
Now in its 30th year, NATYCAA is the professional organization of two year college athletics administrators and membership is open to all two year institutions from throughout the country. NATYCAA is administered by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), which is in its 54th year.
