Irvine Valley's athlete of the week for Nov. 27 is sophomore women's volleyball player Mia Bertolone.

The star setter finished with 52 assists (her third best total of the season) in IVC's five-set (25-22, 20-25, 25-21, 17-25, 15-9), regional-final win Saturday night against Orange Coast at home.

The victory helped move the Lasers on to the 3C2A State Championships, starting Friday at Mt. San Antonio College.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 21-4 overall under first-year head coach Anna Unke.

The Lasers will take on No. 1 from Northern California San Joaquin Delta on Friday at 10 a.m. in an opening-round match at state.

Bertolone also added 10 digs, two aces and one block in Irvine Valley's win on Saturday over OCC.

Bertolone, out of Douglas High in Nevada, has led the state in assists most of the season.

She has recorded at least 30 assists in 24 of IVC's 25 matches and eight contests with at least 40 assists. 

Bertolone recorded a season-best 61 assists against Orange Coast when the Lasers rallied to win in five sets at home on Oct. 6.

She also had 60 assists in Irvine Valley's four-set, Orange Empire Conference win over Riverside at home on Nov. 14 to help IVC clinch a share of the conference title.

Bertolone is averaging 11.19 assists and 2.93 digs per set. She was recently named second team all-OEC.
